Company History
The history of Aqua Illinois dates back to 1886 when the formation of a public water supply corporation was authorized by the Common Council of the City of Kankakee. The predecessor to the present corporation, Kankakee Water Company, was formed in 1910.
In its early years, Kankakee Water Company constructed one of the first water filtration plants in the Midwest. Throughout the years since the company was founded a number of acquisitions were made, expanding the company from the City of Kankakee to other communities in central and northern Illinois. The acquisitions added seven operations in six counties. At the present time the company serves customers in 31 communities in central and northern Illinois. More information on the company’s locations are provided under the "Operating Information" section.
The largest acquisition took place on November 12, 1986 when the common stock of Inter-State Water Company, which provided water service in Vermilion County, Illinois, was acquired. On July 7, 1988 the name of the company was changed to Consumers Illinois Water Company. On September 21, 1995, Inter-State Water Company was merged into CIWC, with CIWC as the surviving corporation.
On March 10, 1999 a merger between Bryn Mawr, Pennsylvania-based Philadelphia Suburban Corporation and Consumers Water Company was approved by the Illinois Commerce Commission and PSC acquired ownership of Consumers.
In 2003, following tremendous growth and expansion into 13 states, PSC announced plans to change the corporation name to Aqua America, Inc., and the ticker symbol to WTR. As a result the company's state subsidiaries changed their names and CIWC became Aqua Illinois on January 16, 2004.
